1 person killed in deputy-involved shooting at Michaels store in West Hills

WEST HILLS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — One person was killed Thursday night during a deputy-involved shooting at a Michaels store in West Hills.

The incident happened at the craft store’s location in The Fallbrook Center located near Fallbrook Avenue and Vanowen Street.

Details are limited, but the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told Eyewitness News that a deputy-involved shooting occurred and that no deputies were injured.

It’s unclear what prompted the shooting, and information on a suspect or suspects was not immediately available.

AIR7 was above the scene as the investigation was unfolding and captured a large law enforcement presence with multiple police vehicles in the parking lot.

Several agencies responded to the scene, including the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles Fire Department, and the U.S. Marshals Service. The sheriff’s department, however, is the lead agency investigating the incident.

AIR7 video also showed at least two bullet holes in one of the windows at the front of the store.

Other AIR7 footage showed a covered body in the parking lot and a gun nearby.

One witness spoke who spoke with ABC7 late Thursday night said he was eating nearby when he heard rapid gunfire.

“We heard some automatic weapon gunshots, and first thing we thought was maybe this was a car going by or something else,” said Shawn Dadon. “But then it was like, five or seven bullets, stopped for a second, and five or seven more bullets shooting. It looked like the police was hiding all around. They were not in visible sight until the shooting happened, and then they came from all around.”

Dadon said he saw at least six unmarked vehicles pull out of the shopping center and follow another vehicle out of the parking lot.

AIR7 was also in the air around 9 p.m. when a police chase ended in nearby Agoura Hills. The driver of that vehicle was taken into custody.

It’s unclear if that incident is connected to the incident at the Michaels store.

Eyewitness News spoke with a security guard with the Assertive Security Guard group, which runs security at the shopping center, and he said that according to the information he received, the incident may be connected to armed robberies in the Calabasas and Agoura Hills areas.
