Local, state officials provide update on winter storm preparations

North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein and local leaders continue to update the public and share preparation information as a weather system expected to bring sleet, snow, and freezing rain moves into western North Carolina this weekend.

Buncombe County officials will hold a public briefing Friday, Jan. 23, at 10 a.m. to discuss preparations for the storm.

The briefing will feature updates from multiple local leaders and departments involved in storm readiness and response. Scheduled speakers include Board of Commissioners Chair Amanda Edwards, representatives from Buncombe County Health and Human Services, county administration, and county emergency services.

Officials from the city of Asheville’s administration and emergency services will also provide updates on city-level preparations. Clay Chandler with the Asheville Water Resources Department will be in attendance to answer questions from the public, particularly regarding water services and infrastructure concerns related to winter weather.

At 11:30 a.m., Gov. Stein will provide an update on storm preparations and guidance after his office declared a state of emergency Thursday, Jan. 22.

On Thursday, the North Carolina governor said the greatest concern with the storm is the potential for power outages and road safety. Officials with the North Carolina Department of Transportation said crews have already pre-treated roads, bridges and overpasses with over 300,000 tons of brine.
