Arshdeep Singh is leading India’s fast bowling attack in the second T20I against New Zealand. In the match taking place at Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur on Friday (January 23), he, however, made a forgetful start and conceded 18 runs in the first over. He was hammered for three fours and one six by New Zealand’s left-handed opening batter Devon Conway in the first six balls of the match.

The 18 conceded by Arshdeep in the first over is the joint most expensive first over by an Indian bowler in a T20I match. During the India-Ireland T20I match played in Malahide on June 28, 2022, Ireland’s Paul Stirling also scored 18 runs off Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s bowling. However, that happened during the run chase, whereas Arshdeep bowled the first over of the match on Friday.

Despite conceding 18 runs in his first over of the match, Arshdeep bowled the third over as well on Friday, but in that as well, he conceded 18 runs. Wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert, who replaced Tim Robinson in New Zealand’s playing XI for the 2nd T20I, smacked Arshdeep for four fours in a row.

The world record of conceding most runs in first over of a T20I match is in name of Serbian medium pacer Vukasin Zimonjic. Vukasin Zimonjic got smacked for 22 runs in the first over of the Hungary-Serbia T20I match played in Szodliget on August 31, 2025.

In that fixture, Zahir Mohammed hammered Zimonjic for 4, 6, 6, and 4 runs in the first four balls of the match before taking a single on the fifth ball. On the last ball, his opening partner Arslan Basharat also scored one run.

The record of conceding the most runs in the first over of an innings in a T20I match is in the name of Switzerland’s Ashwin Vinod.

The right-arm medium pacer conceded 28 runs in the first over of the second innings. Habib Khan smacked him for a four on the first ball of the 158-run chase and scored sixes on the second, third, fifth and sixth deliveries.

Hong Kong’s Ehsan Khan also got hammered for 28 runs in the first over of the run chase against Malaysia on July 26, 2025, in Singapore, but that match was reduced to five overs per side due to rain.
