Six Nations 2026 set for biggest shake-up in years as major format change confirmed

The Six Nations 2026 is set for its biggest overhaul in years, with organisers confirming a major format change that will significantly alter the rhythm of the championship.

From the 2026 tournament onwards, one of the traditional rest weeks will be removed, meaning the competition will be played over six consecutive weeks rather than the familiar seven-week window fans and players have grown accustomed to.

The move marks a clear shift away from the long-standing format that has defined the modern Six Nations era and is expected to have a huge impact on squad management, player welfare and the overall intensity of the championship.

One fallow week gone

Historically, the Six Nations has featured two fallow weeks to allow players time to recover from the physical toll of Test rugby. Under the new structure, only one rest week will remain, with teams required to back up high-intensity matches more regularly.

Organisers believe the streamlined format will help maintain momentum, boost broadcast appeal and avoid the stop-start nature that has frustrated some supporters in recent years.

Speaking on the change, RUCK editor Steve Smith said:
“The refreshed format will bring more intensity and fewer pauses, ensuring storylines stay hot and momentum never dips.”

Player welfare concerns

Despite the potential benefits, the decision has already raised concerns among coaches and medical staff.

International stars are already pushed to their limits by packed club and international calendars, and the removal of a rest week adds further pressure to an already demanding season.

Several head coaches are expected to rotate squads more aggressively under the new system, while fringe players could see increased opportunities as teams manage workloads more carefully.

Medical teams will also be watching closely, with the condensed schedule leaving less margin for error when it comes to knocks, concussions and soft-tissue injuries.
