Gloucester vs Bath preview
Gloucester fans would probably like to think their season can’t get any worse, but a visit from rivals Bath, who racked up more than 100 points in two big European wins over the last fortnight, is probably not the most welcome fixture.
The Cherry & Whites lost as favourites at bottom side Newcastle in their last league outing while Champions Cup defeats to Edinburgh and Toulon sealed their early exit from Europe this month.
A huge injury list has played a big part and head coach George Skivington has not shied away from admitting some of his available players are not up to the level needed.
However, there has been no shortage of effort and commitment from the Gloucester players, and that may be enough to keep them within a double-figure handicap against Bath.
Bath made light of a 17-point line in their last Premiership trip, winning 50-14 at Newcastle, while they signed off the Champions Cup pool stage with a 43-20 victory over Castres and a 63-10 rout of Edinburgh last week.
However, those European matches were played under the pressure of jostling for places in a tight pool, and it would be no surprise if their intensity levels dropped after those tough tests.
Gloucester, drawn in the same section, faced their final pool game against Toulon, who were equally fired up to claim a high finish, but the English side battled well and it took an 80th-minute try to give the final scoreline a convincing look at 31-14.
At home in the Premiership Gloucester have beaten Quins and stayed within a single-figure margin of defeat to Northampton and Saracens.
Gloucester’s personnel problems are starting to ease slightly – winger Ollie Thorley returns from a ban while centre Josiah Edwards Giraud has recovered from injury – while Bath have rung the changes in their line-up and it’s quite likely some players will be more concerned about avoiding injury before the announcement of England’s Six Nations squad.
Wet conditions could also hamper Bath’s attack, even on Gloucester’s artificial surface, and while a derby upset looks likely to prove beyond the hosts, it may not be a runaway success for the defending champions.
