Premieres of ‘Josephine’ & ‘I Want Your Sex’

Day 2 of the Sundance Film Festival is in full swing with buzzy premiering films today from writer/director Beth de Araújo feature, Josephine, starring Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan; Greg Araki’s I want Your Sex, and Charlie xcx’s mockumentary, ‘The Moment.

The Sundance Institute gathers tonight at the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley for ‘Celebrating Sundance Institute: A Tribute to Founder Robert Redford.’ This year’s gala honors Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao with the Trailblazer Award, while Nia DaCosta and Geeta Gandbhir receive the Vanguard Awards for fiction and nonfiction, respectively.

These creators join previously announced Luminary Award recipients Ed Harris and Gyula Gazdag in a night dedicated to independent storytelling. Additional special guest participants include Amy Redford, Ava DuVernay, Ethan Hawke, David Lowery, Tessa Thompson, and more.

Gregg Araki will premiere his 11th Sundance film, I Want Your Sex, starring Cooper Hoffman as Elliot, who lands a job with artist and provocateur Erika Tracy, portrayed by Olivia Wilde. What begins as Elliot’s fantasy of becoming Erika’s sexual muse quickly spirals into a dark, circular odyssey of obsession and murder. More than just a satire, Araki’s latest is a sharp, sex-forward reflection on the modern state of kink, power, and sexual autonomy.

Later, premiering at the EcclesTheater, The Moment, a flashy and tongue-in-cheek hyper-pop mockumentary, marks the feature debut of director Aidan Zamiri. Serving as a creative reflection on the meteoric cultural impact of brat, the film stars Charli xcx as an exaggeratedly manic version of herself navigating the pressures of her first arena tour. Supported by a cast including Hailey Gates and Alexander Skarsgård, Charli balances an ironic, self-aware sense of humor with an earnest exploration of artistic integrity and the weight of legacy.

The Sundance Midnight section showcases two distinct visions of queer and millennial struggle from the Oceania region. Adrian Chiarella’s Leviticus is a haunting Australian debut that follows two star-crossed teenage boys, Naim and Ryan, as they flee a violent entity that takes the form of their deepest desire. Melding religious fanaticism with coming-of-age horror, the film offers a sensitive yet chilling reflection on the dangers faced by queer youth.

In sharp contrast, the directing duo THUNDERLIPS brings the zany and gross-out New Zealand feature Mum, I’m Alien Pregnant. Following a messy millennial underachiever (Hannah Lynch) who is accidentally knocked up by an extraterrestrial, the film marries vivid pregnancy body horror with deadpan Kiwi humor. While Leviticus explores the spiritual violence of small-town isolation, Mum tackles the uproarious, slimy reality of navigating parental boundaries and parasitic “new tenants” in one’s womb.
