KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -A massive winter storm is making its way across the south, bringing in all types of winter weather to east TN and Kentucky later today.

FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY SATURDAY & SUNDAY: This system moves in Saturday morning and precipitation will continue through the day Sunday, eventually clearing out late Sunday night. All hazards of winter weather are possible at the start. A WINTER STORM WARNING AND ICE STORM WARNING is in place for East TN & Southeastern KY counties highlighted below. A high wind warning is in place for the high elevations of the Smokies.

SATURDAY:

TIMING: Arrives late morning into early afternoon from west to east and will be widespread by 4 PM. It may not reach the ground at first due to dry air. It will remain widespread and heavy through the overnight.

TYPE: It will start as snow or sleet, but slowly transition to a wintry mix of sleet or freezing rain in the afternoon and evening.

AMOUNTS: A dusting to an inch or two of snow is possible from Knoxville to Crossville and north of I-40. 2-3 inches is possible near the TN/Ky line and the northern Plateau, unless it changes to sleet or freezing rain quicker. Sleet may also accumulate in some areas.

SUNDAY:

TIMING AND TYPE: A change to all rain is now looking more possible Sunday thanks to the warm nose of air moving temperatures above freezing. Some wintry mix is still possible in spots.

FRIGID NEXT WEEK: High temperatures remain well below freezing going into early next week which could lead to black ice or flash freezing Monday and Tuesday morning. Morning lows will be in the single digits and teens with highs near freezing.
