Syracuse issues snow safety alert ahead of storm that could bring up to 18 inches of snow
Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse issued a snow safety alert Friday night before a winter storm that is expected to dump up to 18 inches of snow on the city beginning Sunday.
Forecasters are predicting 12 to 18 inches of snow between Sunday and Monday, along with extreme cold and wind chill temperatures ranging from 15 to 25 degrees below zero.
The city’s Department of Public Works warned that Monday’s commute could be affected as crews work to clear roads throughout the storm.
Plows will first clear high-volume roads, emergency routes and hills to maintain access for emergency vehicles.
Neighborhood side streets will be plowed once major routes are cleared and snowfall has slowed or stopped, officials said.
City officials are warning residents to prepare for hazardous driving conditions.
The city asks that people limit travel if possible and follow alternate side parking regulations so plows can effectively clear streets. Police will ticket and tow vehicles that violate parking rules, they said.
Property owners are required to clear snow from sidewalks along their properties and around nearby fire hydrants. The Syracuse Fire Department asks residents to clear a three-foot area around hydrants and create a path to them.
During snow storms, the city will focus parking enforcement on designated priority streets in the Northeast, Southeast, Northwest and Southwest neighborhoods, where on-street parking and narrow roadways can make plowing more difficult.
Seasonal odd-even parking restrictions will also be enforced on several downtown blocks, including portions of Erie Boulevard East, East Water Street, South Warren Street, Montgomery Street, Madison Street and East and West Jefferson streets. Signage has been posted noting the hours and restrictions.
Residents can track plow progress using the city’s live snow plow map and submit snow-related concerns to Cityline using the SYRCityline app or by calling 315-448-CITY (2489). In emergencies, call 911.
