Preview: Sheffield Wednesday (H)

Bristol City host Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, January 24th (3pm) at Ashton Gate.

The Robins are without a league win since their New Year’s Day win over Portsmouth and a draw at Oxford United last weekend and a defeat to Ipswich Town in midweek have seen City drop to 11th in the league table but remain only three points from the play-off spots.

While Gerhard Struber will be boosted by the return of Ross McCrorie, who is available for selection following suspension, Zak Vyner is unavailable for selection after suffering an injury in City’s midweek defeat to Ipswich Town.

OUR OPPONENTS: SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

Sheffield Wednesday travel to BS3 targeting three points and hopes of ending their 22-game winless run in league action.

Throughout what has been a turbulent season, the Owls find themselves at the bottom of the Sky Bet Championship table.

Not helped by an 18-point deduction in October following administration issues, Henrik Pedersen’s side are on -7 points after 27 league games.

The Owls have conceded 54 league goals this season, three of which were in the reverse fixture against City earlier this season.

Club Captain Barry Bannan has announced that Saturday’s game against the Robins will be his last for Sheffield Wednesday.

ONE TO WATCH: BARRY BANNAN

Owls Club Captain Barry Bannan began his career at Scottish side Albion Rovers.

From there, the 36-year-old made the switch to Celtic Academy before joining Aston Villa’s Academy.

Bannan progressed through Villa’s academy before making his senior debut against Hamburg in 2008 in the Europa League.

Between his 89 appearances for the Villans, the midfielder enjoyed loan spells at Derby County, Blackpool and Leeds United before signing a three-year deal with Crystal Palace.

The Scotsman spent time on loan at Bolton before joining Sheffield Wednesday in 2015.

Internationally, Bannan has been capped 27 times for the Tartan Army.

Since his arrival at Hillsborough, the now club legend has made more than 450 appearances for the Owls, scoring 37 goals and adding 75 assists in the process.

Despite the obvious difficulties the club has faced this season, Bannan remains a constant and has featured in all 27 league games this campaign, scoring three goals.

Ahead of Saturday’s game, Bannan announced that it would be his last for the club.

The Owls’ number 10 has faced Bristol City 16 times in his career and won six, drawn six and lost four. In that time, Bannan has scored three goals and assisted three goals, making him one to watch for City.
