Inside Mets’ star-studded overhaul that comes with historical caveat

All that is keeping me from really liking this Mets offseason is history. That generally the teams perceived as winning the winter so often follow by being among the biggest disappointments of the actual season.

And that has been part of Mets’ lore. Consider:

After the 1991 season, they added Bobby Bonilla, Eddie Murray and Bret Saberhagen, and were a 1992 disaster on (72-90) and off the field, getting dubbed “The Worst Team Money Could Buy.”

After the 2001 season, they added Roberto Alomar, Pedro Astacio, Jeromy Burnitz, Roger Cedeño, Shawn Estes and Mo Vaughn, and went 75-86 in 2002, leading to Bobby Valentine’s firing.
