Broncos get good news on Jim Leonhard front (plus a Vance Joseph update)

Six of the NFL’s head coach openings have already been filled, and it remains to be seen if one of the remaining four positions will go to current Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph.

The Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns and Las Vegas Raiders have shown interest in Joseph, but it’s unclear if the Buffalo Bills will pursue him. Joseph was thought to be a notable candidate for the Cardinals’ job (he previously served as a DC in Arizona), but The Athletic‘s Dianna Russini reported Saturday that Raheem Morris, Anthony Campanile and Mike LaFleur are the leading candidates.

That would leave the Browns and Raiders (and maybe the Bills) as potential landing spots for Joseph. If he does land a head coach position, the Broncos will receive a pair of compensatory draft picks from the NFL.

Meanwhile, two teams that were considering Denver defensive backs coach Jim Leonhard for their defensive coordinator openings have filled their DC positions. First, the Dallas Cowboys hired Christian Parker as their new DC, ruling out Leonhard. After that, the Green Bay Packers hired Jonathan Gannon as their new DC. Before the Packers landed Gannon, a report indicated there was “mutual interest” between Leonhard and Green Bay.

There are still other teams that could target Leonhard as a DC, but the Cowboys and Packers being off the board is notable. If the Broncos lose Joseph, Leonhard would presumably be a top in-house candidate to replace him.
