Onondaga County issues travel advisory as winter storm bears down on Central NY

Syracuse, N.Y. — Onondaga County has issued a travel advisory for today as a winter storm begins dropping heavy snow in Central New York.

The advisory doesn’t restrict travel but warns drivers that they are likely to face hazardous conditions if they venture onto the roads today. The advisory takes effect immediately and remains in place until further notice.

All of Central New York is under a winter weather warning until 7 p.m. Monday.

One to 2 feet of snow is expected through Monday morning, the National Weather Service said. The snow will be most intense today, when 12 inches or more could fall in 12 hours.

The snow could stick around for a long time, as the region is expected to see the coldest week in years.

“An Arctic siege has taken over our state,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said today. “It is brutal, it is bone-chilling and it is dangerous.”

New York, like more than a dozen other states, is under a state of emergency as the storm makes its way from Texas to Maine.

Hochul has also announced travel restrictions, including a ban on long combination tandem vehicles on the Thruway that took effect at 6 a.m. today.
