Angelina Jolie Is Reportedly ‘Excited’ As She Prepares To Leave The US For Europe After Saying She ‘No Longer Recognizes’ Her Country

There have been rumors of Angelina Jolie wanting to follow in the footsteps of stars like Ellen DeGeneres and Rosie O’ Donnell and leave the U.S. for Europe for quite a few months now. And they don’t seem to be going away!

The 50-year-old Oscar-winning actress is reportedly still committed to leaving Los Angeles – and the U.S. in general – with insiders saying she’s actually quite “excited” about it!

Angelina Jolie Will Be ‘Very Happy When She’s Able To Leave Los Angeles’

During a 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Atelier Jolie founder described Los Angeles as lacking “humanity,” and explained that she was only staying there for the sake of her children while they were minors.

“I am here because I have to be here from a divorce, but as soon as they’re 18, I’ll be able to leave. When you have a big family, you want them to have privacy, peace, safety,” she told the pub at the time.

Insiders have echoed this many times since, noting that the Maleficent actress “never wanted to live in L.A. full time,” and has been unhappy there for years, reiterating that she remained because of her children and the custody arrangement with the Fight Club alum.

“She didn’t have a choice because of the custody arrangement with Brad,” a source previously told People. “She’s eyeing several locations abroad. She’ll be very happy when she’s able to leave Los Angeles,” they added at the time.

Angelina Jolie Says She Doesn’t ‘Recognize’ The US: ‘Very Heavy Times’

The Eternals actress spoke about her desire to leave the U.S. entirely at the San Sebastián Film Festival in Spain last September, which she attended while promoting her new film Couture.

She addressed the country’s political turmoil, especially following Donald Trump‘s return to the White House, and said: “Anything, anywhere that divides or limits personal expressions and freedoms, I think, is very dangerous.”

“I don’t, at this time, recognize my country,” Jolie declared. “I’ve always lived internationally. My family is international. My life, my worldview, is equal [and] united,” she went on.

The Tomb Raider alum concluded by making a “careful” comment, adding: “I think these are such serious times that we have to be careful not to say things casually. So I’ll be careful in a press conference. But these are very, very heavy times.”

Angelina Jolie Is ‘Looking Forward’ To What Her Life Will Be In 2026 And Beyond

The mom-of-six has long been open about wanting to relocate once her 17-year-old twins, Vivienne Marcheline and Knox Léon, who she shares with ex-husband Brad Pitt, turn 18. Their milestone birthday is fast approaching on July 12th, meaning she doesn’t have long to wait ’til her relocation journey starts!

The Maria star isn’t waiting for that date to start planning, though, as she has reportedly already started the process of putting her Los Angeles home on the market. At the end of last year, a source told People that the property was being shown to pre-qualified buyers after renovations.

“She’s ready for a life that isn’t centered in Los Angeles,” the source dished. “There are a lot of projects she’s excited about and she’s feeling good. She’s looking forward to 2026 and the flexibility she’ll have then.”

Europe appears to be the favorite to start with, but the Without Blood director has spoken of her desire to live in other places too, including Cambodia, which is where she adopted eldest son Maddox from in 2002. She’s previously called the country the one place “in my heart” that she considers home.
