Operations back to normal after car crashes into Detroit Metro Airport terminal

Romulus — Operations have returned to normal at an airport terminal after a car crashed into it, airport authorities said Sunday.
An investigation remains underway into how a driver on Friday left the road and slammed into the terminal, said Matt Morawski, director of communications & External Affairs at the Wayne County Airport Authority.
Travelers at Detroit Metro Airport said they were surprised a vehicle got close enough to the McNamara Terminal to crash into it.
The vehicle broke through a set of glass check-in doors for Delta Airlines at about 7:30 p.m., hitting a ticket counter, officials said.
Six people were treated at the scene by the WCAA Fire Department, said Morawski. There were no visible injuries at the time, he said.
A suspect is in custody and has been petitioned for medical evaluation. Charges have not been determined, Morawski said.
By Saturday morning, the terminal doorway was boarded up and panels blocked the baggage check area from public view.
Sean Younger of the Lansing area didn’t know what had happened until he was interviewed by The Detroit News.
“It’s pretty wild,” said Younger. “I can’t believe that someone would be driving fast enough to cause that kind of damage through here.”
Younger said that kind of behavior would be hard to police. But he said there could be more “passive controls” to prevent cars from driving into the terminal.
Morgan Wheatley of Ann Arbor agreed. “There are things they could do to prevent something like that from happening in the future,” Wheatley said.
Morawski said bollards are posted outside McNamara Terminal. The vehicle was removed and workers boarded up the entrance “within a couple hours,” Morawski said.
The Detroit News has reached out to Delta Airlines about the impact to the airline’s services.
Social media posts of a video showing a car inside the terminal and check-in area were circulating.
Another video showed a man who was yelling being forcibly removed from the area of the crash by airport officials, but it was unknown if he was the driver.
