Under Salt Marsh: Kelly Reilly, Rafe Spall, Jonathan Pryce & more on all things Welsh, coming home – and Brummie accents!

The small Welsh village of Morfa Halen is under threat. Out at sea, a once-in a generation storm is brewing that could shatter the homes clustered on the coast. And the community itself faces being torn apart by a shocking discovery which re-opens old wounds from a death several years ago.

At the centre of Sky’s Under Salt Marsh is former detective turned teacher Jackie Ellis (Yellowstone’s Kelly Reilly) who is still recovering from the previous death and now finds herself reluctantly re-united with her former police partner, Eric Bull (Trying’s Rafe Spall). As they mount another investigation among a hostile community haunted by secrets, the impending storm means they only have limited time to get to the truth before it’s all washed away. The six part show also stars Jonathan Pryce (The Crown), Harry Lawtey (Mr Burton) and Naomi Yang (Chimerica).

In the exclusive interview below, all of them reflect on the experience of shooting the show in rural North Wales. Pryce, who was born and brought up only 50 miles away, describes how he was on home territory during the shoot and reflects on his upbringing in a small village, while Yang recalls how she took the opportunity to explore the area. For Reilly, who is now based in New York, it was a “coming home” experience, which she managed to squeeze in despite the demands of a forthcoming Yellowstone series. And Lawtey considers why he’s had so many Welsh roles, even though he was born in Oxford. Rafe Spall, on the other hand, talks about why he decided his character had to be a Brummie – and why it’s an underrated accent.
