Cleveland Browns coaching search: Nate Scheelhaase is still in the mix

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase is still in the mix for the Browns head coach job even though they flew home from Los Angeles on Monday night without making him an offer.

As of late Tuesday morning, the Browns hadn’t yet reached back out to Scheelhaase since wrapping up their lengthy interview with him on Monday, and are back at team headquarters in Berea working through their options.

One of Scheelhaase’s head coach opportunities, the Bills, dried up on Tuesday when Buffalo agreed to a five-year deal with their offensive coordinator Joe Brady to replace Sean McDermott. Scheelhaase received an interview request from the Bills during his lengthy interview with the Browns on Monday, and interviewed with them virtually on Monday night.

Former Browns candidate Grant Udinski, offensive coordinator of the Jaguars, had also interviewed with the Bills and was still in contention. Udinski withdrew his name from the Browns’ search on Monday morning.

At this point, all four of their finalists are still in the hunt, including defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, Scheelhaase and Commanders run game coordinator/running backs coach Anthony Lynn. Lynn was a late add to the search on Saturday night when the Browns interviewed him in Florida.

A pairing of Monken and Schwartz, both 59, has been discussed, with Monken as head coach and Schwartz as defensive coordinator. Schwartz would also be a strong option to remain as defensive coordinator with Scheelhaase and Lynn. If Monken doesn’t get the head coach job, he’s expected to take the Giants offensive coordinator post under his former Ravens boss, John Harbaugh.

None of the Browns candidates have been ruled out as of late morning Tuesday, and none have removed themselves from consideration.
