Why the Chargers & OC Mike McDaniel are Perfect Fit on Offense

From 2022 to 2023, the Dolphins tied for sixth in offensive success rate (45.8 percent) and ranked seventh in EPA per play (0.052).
Miami was lethal in 2023 when the Dolphins led the league in both total offense (401.3 yards per game), passing offense (265.5 passing yards per game) and were No. 2 in scoring offense (29.2).
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa led the NFL in passing yards that season, a year that began with McDaniel’s offense putting up 36 points against the Bolts in the season opener.
Miami’s 2023 offense was just the 18th team in NFL history to boast a 4,000-yard passer, 1,000-yard rusher and a pair of 1,000-yard receivers in the same season.
Justin Herbert paired with McDaniel? Sign us up for that.
Harbaugh also noted he wanted the Chargers next Offensive Coordinator to be “one that has a track record, has proven success and can show us his vision for what our offense is going to look like.”
McDaniel can point to his recent stops in either Miami or San Francisco for that.
Remember that his offense put up a whopping 70 points and 726 yards of offense against the Broncos in Week 3 of the 2023 season.
Those are video game numbers. And that yardage total is the most by an NFL team in league history.
And if you’re wondering if McDaniel can put together a rushing attack that meets Harbaugh’s liking, just look at what he did in San Francisco.
McDaniel was the 49ers Offensive Coordinator in 2021 after spending the previous three seasons as the team’s Run Game Coordinator.
Over those four years, the 49ers racked up the sixth-most rushing yards (8,538), were tied for seventh with 237 total explosive rushes of 10-plus yards and had the ninth-most rushing touchdowns (71).
So yes, McDaniel has that proven track record in both the air and on the ground.
And it’s easy to envision why Harbaugh and Chargers General Manager Joe Hortiz were all in on landing McDaniel.
