Slow warm-up Tuesday for D-FW, but icy roads still a hazard with freezing fog forecast

North Texas will continue to shiver Tuesday from the record-setting cold weather that arrived last weekend, though no winter precipitation is expected.

The daytime temperatures are forecast to reach a high of 39 degrees, although a slight breeze will make it feel cooler, according to the National Weather Service’s Fort Worth office. South to southwest winds around 5 mph are expected. Cloud cover could also limit daytime melting.

Overnight temperatures into Wednesday are expected to drop below freezing and bottom out in the low 20s with southward winds around 5 mph, forecasters say.

That means anything that melts during the day and is still on roadways will refreeze Tuesday night, making roads and walkways especially treacherous for motorists and pedestrians.

Widespread freezing fog is also possible Wednesday morning, which forms when fog makes contact with objects or surfaces at or below freezing. The droplets can form a clear glaze, presenting a hazard similar to black ice on stairs, rails, roads and vehicles.

Across the country, other states have faced more significant power outages and storm impacts. Most of the outages were in the South, where weekend blasts of freezing rain caused tree limbs and power lines to snap, inflicting crippling outages on northern Mississippi and parts of Tennessee. Officials warned that it could take days for power to be restored.

In Dallas, the rest of the week calls for daytime highs in the low-to-upper 40s with temperatures dropping below freezing overnight. No precipitation is expected, though cloudy conditions are expected.

Another cold front is expected to arrive in North Texas late Thursday, according to the weather service. This system is not expected to be as potent as last week’s Arctic blast, however.
