Melanie Martinez is back with “Possession,” her first new music since the release of her 2023 album Portals. The New York–based singer cues up pensive guitar notes that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Spaghetti Western soundtrack, before singing: “I hit my head real hard, I woke up in the dark.” Ouch! The drums that come in give the song an urgency, a tension that’s resolved during the cathartic chorus. The sardonic analysis of traditional marital roles are accented by swelling strings and an infectious melody from Martinez.
