Aurora schools cleared after lockdown, threat investigation ongoing

AURORA, Neb. (KSNB) – The Aurora Police Department has released new information about a reported threat that caused the schools to go into lockdown.

Around 10:15 a.m. Monday, dispatch received a report of an active threat at the Aurora High School.

School administration was immediately notified by law enforcement about the threat and went into lockdown.

A short time later, as a precaution, the Aurora Middle School was also placed into lockdown.

Upon law enforcement’s arrival, both schools were secured and searched with the assistance of school administrative staff.

Aurora Superintendent Jody Phillips said in a release that once the building was secure and searches of the common areas were completed, law enforcement and school administration conducted searches of all classrooms and rooms.

Aurora Police Chief Paul Graham said in a release that officers did not identify or locate a threat in either school.

Once the searches were complete, it was determined the building to be safe and ready for normal operation. The lockdown was lifted around 12:34 p.m.

Phillips said in the release that students from the high school were brought into the gym to debrief, inform them of the incident and ensure they were all ok. Middle school students were also addressed in a similar manner.

Law enforcement cleared the scene at about 1 p.m.

The Aurora Police Department was assisted by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department and the Nebraska State Patrol.

The superintendent said the staff and students handled this situation extremely well. They remained calm and followed the Standard Response Protocols for lockdown.

Aurora Public Schools will have staff available to meet with students who may need assistance and support in dealing with this incident.

“We will continue to monitor our students and building procedures to ensure our students, staff, and buildings remain safe,” the release from the school said.

This is an ongoing investigation.
