Kevin Gates Claims He ‘Could’ve Cured’ His Late Father of AIDS: ‘If You Could’ve Seen My Daddy, He Was Beautiful’

Kevin Gates dropped by Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay to talk about a myriad of topics, which included his late father who died when he was young from complications from AIDS.

Sharpe broached the subject around the 14:35 mark, asking if he knew how his father contracted the fatal disease. “I read your father passed of AIDS,” he said. “Was he gay? Was he an IV drug user? Did you ever find out how he contracted it?” Gates responded by saying his father contracted AIDS from sharing needles during drug use and spoke highly of his late father.

“He never lied to me about nothing,” Gates said, before explaining that his father’s battle with the disease is what first sparked his interest in holistic medicine. “That’s what made me get into holistic medicine, and he was so beautiful,” the Louisiana rapper said. “If you could’ve seen my daddy, he was beautiful. It’s crazy you asked me that. Nobody ever asks me this. I was with him. I was with him for a long time up until he passed.”

Gates added that he learned a lot from his father, but also suggested that he could’ve cured him. “He taught me a lot of beautiful lessons,” he said. “If I could go back in time — it’s sad what I’m about to say — but I could’ve cured him. … I ain’t [late Hondruan herbalist] Dr. Sebi or no sh– like that. I ain’t trying to act like that, but I could have cured him. He’s the one who made me take health so serious.”

Kevin Gates’ father died when the rapper was a teenager.
