Lorry driver stuck under Swindon bridge had ‘no insurance’

Earlier today (January 31), it was reported that a lorry had become wedged under the Whitehouse Bridge in Swindon, at Transfer Bridges.

Police attended the scene, and the road was partially blocked for a while.

In a statement, police have said: “We responded to an incident shortly after 11am today (31/01) in which a lorry had become stuck beneath the rail bridge at Transfer Bridges in Swindon.

“The driver was reported for driving otherwise in accordance with a licence, having no insurance and careless driving.

“The road was reopened at 12.20pm.”

Closures were temporarily in place from Great Western Way to Station Road, and police urged drivers to expect ‘significant’ traffic build up, and to seek alternative routes.

Police said at the time: “Please be aware that closures are in place from Great Western Way to Station Road in Swindon after a heavy goods vehicle has become stuck beneath the rail bridge.

“Recovery is expected to take some hours.

“Drivers are strongly advised to seek alternative routes and expect significant traffic build up.”
