It’s been over a decade since Steven Gerrard left Liverpool but ‘Captain Fantastic’ remains as close to the club as can be. Gerrard, 45, will be at Anfield on Saturday evening as the reigning Premier League champions host Newcastle United.

The mouth-watering clash between the two clubs – which is the fifth-highest scoring game in Premier League history – provides the Reds the opportunity to end their five-match winless streak in the league.

The game will be broadcasted in the UK by TNT Sports with Gerrard returning to the punditry desk. The coverage will be led by Lynsey Hipgrave with Gerrard being joined on the panel by ex-Liverpool team-mates Joe Cole and Steve McManaman.

Saudi exit

Gerrard left his post at Al-Ettifaq in January 2025 after an 18-month stint with the Saudi Pro League side. During his time at the club, the Liverpool legend struggled to established themselves as credible contenders for the title.

At the time of his departure, the club sat 12th in the table with just five wins in their opening 17 games. Gerrard and the side came to a mutual agreement to end his tenure in Saudi Arabia. Despite failing to position the club among the league’s elite, Gerrard admitted he enjoyed the challenge of working abroad for the first time in his managerial career.

In a statement upon his exit, he said: “I want to express my gratitude to the club, the players, the fans and everyone involved for the opportunity and the support during my time here, especially the president, Mr. Samer, CEO Mr. Hamad and the head of the football committee Mr. Hatim.

“I express my gratitude for Mr. Samer and Mr. Hatim from the first day I was warmly welcomed and I have enjoyed to work in a new country with a different culture. So overall I have learnt a lot and it’s been a positive experience personally and for my family as well.

“But football is unpredictable, and sometimes things don’t go the way we want. However, I leave with the great respect for the club and the country, I have no doubt that the work being done will bring success in the future, and I wish the team the very best for the rest of the season.”

Huge net worth

Thanks to a lucrative playing and managerial career, Gerrard has accrued a staggering net worth of around £75 million, according to 888Sports. Of that mammoth figure, £22.5m is believed to have been earned during his playing days, with 17 years spent at Liverpool before enjoying a season at MLS franchise LA Galaxy.

His managerial stint in Saudi Arabia was arguably more financially fruitful than his playing career as he was reportedly earning £15.2 million-a-year at Al-Ettifaq. The annual salary made Gerrard the fourth-highest paid manager in the world at the time.

Only Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola and Diego Simeone earned more than him. During his days as one of the best midfielders on the planet, Gerrard earned a pretty penny through his endorsements deals, thanks to long-term partnerships with the likes of Adidas, Jaguar and Lucozade.

Daughter’s baby with jailed criminal’s son

It was in July last year that Gerrard became a grandfather for the first time when his eldest daughter Lilly-Ella gave birth to her daughter named Lilah Grey. The 21-year-old welcomed her first child with boyfriend Lee Byrne.

Lee is the son of infamous Dublin criminal Liam Byrne, who was sentenced to five years in prison for weapons charges back in October 2024. The grandfather of Lee, James ‘Jaws’ Bryne, was a career criminal and passed away in 2024 at the age of 77.

Despite the family history of the Lilly-Ella’s partner, LBC reports that the former Liverpool skipper treats Lee “just as he would anyone else.” Upon the initial announcement that Lilly-Ella was pregnant, Gerrard replied on social media: “We can’t wait, great news and congratulations – we love you.” He’s since posted pictures of him and his granddaughter online.
