WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Lawmakers are considering a proposal to end yearly car registration in Kansas.
If the bill passes, vehicle owners would only have to pay a one-time registration fee on a car when it is bought, and never again after that.
The average new car registration fee in Kansas is currently $80.
Some states around Kansas pay a little more or less depending on where you are.
- Colorado: $595
- Missouri: $57
- Oklahoma: $100
While some are excited about the fees potentially being dashed, others feel the need to keep paying them.
“I just think it’s something we have to do, being citizens. We have to fund everything, from schools, to roads, to everything, so again it’s something that has to be done,” says Corey Smith.
The State of Kansas makes over $205 million every year from title and registration fees alone.
The bill would only affect personal vehicles and not commercial vehicles.
Currently, a hearing date for the bill has not been set.
