20 goals in 11 games?!: Former West Brom and Manchester United keeper finds red hot striking form after non-league position switch

Signed as a young goalkeeper under Bryan Robson in a deal that saw Tomasz Kuszczak head the other way – Steele never really made the cut at Albion.

He struggled to nail down a regular place – and went out on loan, famously to Barnsley where he played a key role in their run to the FA Cup semi-finals.

He featured just twice for Albion in the league – before going on to make his name elsewhere, with Barnsley and Bristol City, where he enjoyed superb cup runs, and he also played in Greece.

His playing days came to an end and Steele went into coaching, mostly recently as joint manager of Peterborough Sports in the National League North.

But at the moment he is grabbing headlines not for the work with his hands – but in front of goal.

Since leaving professional football, Steele has moved from being a shot stopper to a goal scorer – and last weekend he took away the match ball as he hit a treble for a club called the Youth Dreams Project, an organisation set up by Steele in 2014.

His goal tally has taken him to 20 goals in eleven games in the Peterborough District League – and the ex-Albion keeper is loving it.

He said: “I was 36 when I finished playing [professionally] but I started playing up front as a bit of a joke to keep fit,.

“I’m not good enough as a goalkeeper any more, and it’s been a really good season for me. I’ve scored in all 15 games I’ve played in league and cup.”

His side was born out of Steele’s youth project, which is aimed at children of all abilities while also offering football scholarships and an academy.
