Gwinnett County Police Chief JD McClure has identified an officer who was killed and another who was injured during an “unprovoked attack” at a Holiday Inn Express on Sunday morning.
What we know:
Police said the two officers, identified as Pradeep Tamang and Cpl. David Reed responded to the hotel in the 1700 block of East Park Place Boulevard around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, following calls regarding fraud.
Chief McClure said the agency received a call reporting that a person had fraudulently booked a room at the hotel. Officers Tamang and Reed went to the room where the person, identified as Kevin Andrews, was staying and were invited inside.
During a discussion, Andrews, 35, allegedly pulled out a gun and started firing. The officers returned fire.
As a result of the shootout, Officer Tamang died on the scene and Cpl. Reed was critically injured by several gunshot wounds.
Andrews was also injured but received non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.
Cpl. Reed remains in the hospital in critical condition; however, police say he is stable. Andrews is also still at the hospital and has not been taken to jail for booking.
Chief McClure said that Andrews had active warrants for violent crimes out of DeKalb County. Additionally, Andrews has several prior convictions for violent crimes, guns, and narcotics.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called to the scene and has taken control of the investigation, which is standard practice for shootings involving an officer.
Police have not released details regarding the nature of the initial fraud call or who placed it.
The names of the officers and the suspect have not yet been released. The suspect’s condition is also unknown.
What they’re saying:
Both Chief McClure and Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson are urging the community to remain unified and keep the families of those hurt in their prayers.
“We are speaking to the community and asking you to stand in unity. This moment calls for compassion and unity and reflection as we honor and mourn the loss of one of our officers and the officer who is recovering right now,” Hendrickson said at a briefing regarding the incident.
Who was Pradeep Tamang?
25-year-old Tamang had been with the Gwinnett County Police Department since the spring of 2025, according to Chief McClure.
Tamang settled in the US about 10 years ago, originally living in Pennsylvania, where much of his family and his fiancé are, Chief McClure said.
The agency is working to bring Tamang’s fiancé and family to Georgia.
What you can do:
Gwinnett County police have established a fundraiser to support the families of Tamang and Reed during this tragic time.
What we don’t know:
GBI will work with the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office to determine what charges will be filed against Andrews. He is expected to face several charges, including murder and aggravated assault.
Law enforcement is still investigating how Andrews fraudulently rented the room.
The Source: Information about the scene came from a FOX 5 crew on the street. The GBI confirmed its assisting GCPD, but didn’t explain why. It has been updated with information from GCPD.
