Poundland store in Holyhead

The Poundland store in Holyhead is to close this spring – with shoppers calling it “devastating news” for staff and customers.

Poundland avoided collapsing into administration in August after its turnaround plan was approved days before the chain was due to run out of money.

This plan involved the closure of scores of shops across the UK.

Since then a number of stores not on the original list have also been confirmed for closure. This has included the shop on Parc Prestatyn.

North Wales Live was this weekend contacted by a concerned regular customer who said that the store on the retail park in Holyhead was also closing. This has now been confirmed by Poundland.

In a more positive update it is understood that Sports Direct are taking an empty unit at the retail park – with a job for a store manager advertised.

On the closure, a Poundland spokesperson said: “We began a clearance sale at the store on Holyhead Retail Park today as the store is due to close on 19 March.” Join the North Wales Live Whatsapp community now

They added that closures as part of the restructure had now ended with the company ending 2025 with 651 locations, compared to c800 prior to reorganisation.

They said any future closures would be due to standard business-as-usual lease events. It is understood they were unable to secure a new lease deal at this unit on terms that would have allowed them to keep trading.

One shopper told North Wales Live: “I am very angry. Poundland in Holyhead is closing down in March due to a rent increase and it is leaving 10 or more families with no funding or jobs.

“This isn’t just numbers on paper, these are real people, many with children.

“These workers are also left to pay mortgages, bills and rising living costs with absolutely no income. Some of the staff are at the older end of the scale and possibly won’t get new employment, making this situation even more frightening and unfair.”

They added: “It also affects our local community, yet another large building left to rot.

“This town keeps being stripped of opportunities while families are left to pick up the pieces.”

On social media one shopper said it was “devastating” news for all involved.

They added: “Holyhead is increasingly starting to resemble a lorry park rather than a thriving town.”

They urged political representatives to take action to reverse the decline.

Plaid MS for Ynys Mon Rhun ap Iorwerth said: “I’m disappointed to hear of Poundland’s decision to close its Holyhead store, with my primary concern clearly being for the staff there.

“I’ll be contacting both Poundland and the Welsh Government to seek clarity on what support will be made available to them. In the meantime, if anyone impacted by this decision requires additional support, don’t hesitate to get in touch with my office.”
