Historic snowfall causes dangerous road conditions
People were being urged to stay off the roads in the Charlotte region Sunday and even Monday after a snowstorm dropped a foot of snow in some areas over the weekend.
Travel conditions were hazardous on Sunday, Feb. 1 in the Charlotte region and throughout much of the Carolinas following a historic snowstorm on Saturday, Jan. 31.
Parts of the Charlotte area received 8-15 inches of snow throughout the day on Saturday — the region’s most significant snowfall in over 10 years.

Primary roads throughout the region were compacted with snow on Sunday and difficult to drive on. Secondary and residential roads were worse, with inches of unplowed snow piled on the streets.
Sunshine helped melt the snow and ice, largely clearing main roadways on Sunday and on Monday. Still, anything that melted was expected to refreeze overnight Monday into Tuesday, leading to potentially slick driving conditions Tuesday morning.
Drivers were urged to be cautious and move slowly. Local and state officials on Sunday and Monday asked people to stay off the road unless necessary.
