Large Chicago police presence at Tri-Taylor White Castle on Ogden Avenue; UIC officials put out alert

CHICAGO (WLS) — University of Illinois Chicago students and staff are being asked to stay away from campus amid police activity Tuesday.

Authorities are responding to an incident at 1100 S. Wood St., school officials said.

Police are on the scene on the third level of the Wood Street Parking Structure.

UIC officials said no threat exists to the campus as of about 3 p.m.

The garage is open except for the third level.

Those on campus are asked to follow instructions from officials, and those off campus are asked to stay away.

Some roads appeared to be closed near the campus.

There is a large police presence at a Near West Side White Castle restaurant nearby.

Chopper 7 was over the scene about 3 p.m.

Police tape blocked off the parking lot of the restaurant, located at 2356 Roosevelt Road in Tri-Taylor.

A vehicle in the parking lot appeared to be charred, and its windows were shattered.

Officials did not immediately provide information about what led up to the scene.

No. 12 Roosevelt CTA buses are temporarily rerouted in both directions due to police activity near Roosevelt Road and Western Avenue.

Westbound buses will operate via Roosevelt, Damen, Taylor, Western, then resume their normal route on Roosevelt.

Eastbound buses will operate via Roosevelt, Western, Taylor, Ogden, then resume normal route.

It’s not immediately clear if the UIC alert is connected to the nearby police presence.
