Contrary to an earlier report, a remastered version of Fallout 3, the popular video game by the American studio Bethesda Softworks, is not yet available on Xbox Game Pass. But an opinion piece in Screen Rant, likening the experience of playing Fallout 3 on Xbox Series X|S to a modern version of the game, was misreported by multiple news outlets, including this one, as an announcement that a remastered Fallout 3 was now available for free on Xbox Game Pass.
“While the Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas next-gen remasters are currently far from officially confirmed, there is actually an official way to play a remastered version of Fallout 3 right now,” Screen Rant said in the article.
“One of the best things about the Xbox Series X|S is that it can take older games and give them a boost in resolution and framerate. That means classic Fallout titles like Fallout 3 and New Vegas can be accessed via Xbox Game Pass and played at much, much higher quality.”
It is common for gaming studios to release revamped versions of already existing games to fit more modern tech. Bethesda itself just last year released The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, without any prior announcements that it was coming. Fans of the Fallout franchise have been hoping for a similar drop for Fallout 3.

Fallout 3 is an Isometric RPG (Role-Playing Game) set in America, 200 years after a devastating nuclear war. The player controls a 19-year-old character, Lone Wanderer, who leaves a fallout shelter in search of their missing father. Fallout 3 offers freely explorable open worlds, where players can freely engage in combat with a variety of weapons in their arsenal.
After it was released in 2008, it fundamentally changed the Fallout franchise, causing a leap into a fully realised 3D open world which transformed it into a mainstream blockbuster.
Bethesda has not publicly confirmed that it would release a Fallout 3 Remastered.
The report also claimed that Fallout 3 was free on Xbox. It currently costs $9.99 or is included in the Game Pass Premium on the Xbox store.
