A Man on the Inside Is Renewed for Season 3: Ted Danson is Back on the Case

Everybody’s favorite late-in-life detective Charles Nieuwendyk (Ted Danson) picks up another case: Mike Schur’s A Man on the Inside has been renewed for Season 3.
“I’m so excited to see where Charles Nieuwendyk goes next,” Danson tells Tudum. “I’ve been blessed to work with Mike Schur for most of the last decade, and I’m still amazed by what he does. I’m incredibly thankful to him for creating this character and trusting me with him. The cast and crew make it very hard to call this ‘work.’ Huge thanks to Netflix for believing in the show, and letting us keep this ride going.”
Since A Man on the Inside premiered in November of 2024, it’s been no mystery why critics and fans have fallen in love with Schur’s comedy series. Season 1, which was inspired by the Oscar-nominated documentary The Mole Agent, introduces Charles. He’s a recent widower whose daughter, Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis), beseeches him to trade his daily postcard habit for a more substantial hobby. He answers a newspaper ad calling for someone over 70 years old who knows how to use an iPhone, which lands him in the Pacific View retirement community as a private investigator in search of a jewelry thief. While Charles does locate the missing accessories, he also gains a new lease on life and a cadre of dynamic and hilarious friends.
Season 2 ups the ante: Charles goes undercover as an engineering professor at Wheeler College to find out who is trying to thwart a staggering donation from a problematic billionaire, Brad Vinick (Gary Cole). Though Charles has honed his P.I. chops, his dating skills are a little rusty when he meets free-spirited musician and fellow professor Mona (Mary Steenburgen). Is he ready and able to open his heart again after his wife’s passing? And more importantly, has he fallen for the very criminal he’s been sent to unmask? Watch (or rewatch) Season 2 to crack the case, and read up on how Danson and Steenburgen, who’ve been married for decades in real life, translated their one-of-a-kind love to the screen.
“What we did in Season 2 is try to level [Charles] up: make the case bigger and more dramatic, make the stakes higher, and make his detective work both better and also in some ways worse,” Schur told Tudum when Season 2 premiered. “That’s the great joy of a show lasting multiple seasons — you get to just add. All of Season 1 is at the foundation of Season 2, and 1 and 2 will be at the foundation of Season 3.”
Danson and Schur’s signature charm allows them to explore difficult themes of later-in-life reinvention, grief, and family with a fresh and always witty lens. Season 2 clearly resonated for many: After Season 2 premiered, A Man on the Inside garnered a combined viewing of more than 45 million views across both seasons through the end of 2025, remained in the Global Top 10 for five weeks, and earned Danson nominations from the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, and SAG.
With each season, Schur has built out a new roster of shady subjects, brought to life by some of comedy’s finest actors. Season 2 reunited fans with Ellis, Lilah Richcreek Estrada, Stephanie Beatriz, and Stephen McKinley Henderson, while also bringing Max Greenfield, Sam Huntington, Jason Mantzoukas, David Strathairn, Jill Talley, and more into the fold.
