Washington Democrats finally dropped the mask. The so called “millionaire income tax” is not just a tax grab. It is a procedural scam designed to dodge voters who would kill it on sight.
The Democrats slapped an emergency clause on a bill that would not collect a dime until 2029. That is not an emergency. That is an admission that they know a referendum would wipe this thing out, so they are using legislative tricks to silence the public. If you believe in democracy, this should enrage you even if you like the tax. This is cowardice with a fiscal note.
A fake emergency to escape voters
Emergency clauses exist for earthquakes, wars, and immediate threats to public safety. Democrats are abusing it to protect themselves from accountability. This is the worst kind of insider arrogance. They overrode a voter approved ban on income taxes, ignored bipartisan support for that protection, and then rigged the process so citizens cannot easily respond.
Currently, Governor Bob Ferguson is pretending not to support the income tax. It’s a transparent strategy. Washington Democrats will offer slight tweaks so that it gives off the appearance that they moderated the legislation. It’s as big of a scam as including the emergency clause.
Every Democrat backing this maneuver deserves a scarlet letter. Not merely for supporting a tax, but for deliberately short circuiting the public because they do not trust voters. When politicians tell you democracy is on the ballot, believe them. Then watch who is actively trying to bypass it.
