NBA PROSPECT TO MISS BREAKERS’ CLASH WITH PHOENIX

The New Zealand Breakers have confirmed they will be without Karim Lopez for tonight’s clash against the South East Melbourne Phoenix.

In a club statement, the Breakers said:

“López is currently managing a lower leg issue. Following recent medical assessment, the club has taken a cautious approach to prioritise his long-term health and welfare.”

The projected 2026 NBA first-round prospect is coming off a career-best performance last round against Melbourne United, where he posted 32 points, eight rebounds, two assists, one steal and two blocks in a two-point win.

Breakers President of Basketball Operations Dillon Boucher said the club is seeking further medical consultation before confirming a return-to-play timeline.

“While we don’t believe the injury to be serious, we are awaiting further medical advice and will take the absolute best course of action for Karim’s recovery.

“Consequently, he will not suit up tonight. We will provide a further update on his availability for the remainder of the season in due course.”

It’s another tough blow for the Breakers as they battle to secure sixth spot in the NBL Finals race. But the long-term care being shown to Lopez, as he builds toward a crucial NBA Draft offseason, highlights the club’s commitment to his future.

While it’s still early for a definitive update, a season shutdown would not come as a surprise if the club opts for caution.
