Berlin airport halts takeoffs, landings for second day

Berlin Brandenburg Airport said Friday it is suspending flight operations in the morning due to poor weather conditions.
“Due to weather conditions, no take-offs or landings are currently possible,” the airport said in a statement on its website.
Take-offs and landings were already suspended on Thursday due to freezing rain.
Berlin Brandenburg is Germany’s third-busiest airport after the international transit hubs Frankfurt and Munich. It is located in the town of Schönefeld, which lies just south of the German capital and is part of eastern Brandenburg state.

Germany’s DPA news agency cited an airport spokeswoman as saying it was unclear when flights would resume as the airport was being hit by persistent freezing rain and black ice.
She said while airport personnel had worked to clear runways overnight, this was only partially successful and surfaces remained slippery.
