California Governor Gavin Newsom has slammed Donald Trump as ‘disgusting’ for sharing a racist video of Michelle and Barack Obama as monkeys.
The 79-year-old president shared the video in a late-night posting frenzy on his Truth Social platform on Thursday. The video once again brings up the unfounded claims of 2020 election fraud, but at the 59-second mark in the video, an AI-generated clip suddenly appears showing the Obamas’ faces superimposed onto monkey bodies.
In the background, the 1961 song by the Tokens – The Lion Sleeps Tonight – plays in the background. The post has sparked immediate backlash across social media including many people describing it as racist.
Writing on X, Governor Newsom Press Office wrote: “Disgusting behavior by the President. Every single Republican must denounce this. Now.”

“The clinically insane president of the United States has now made more than 50 posts on his social media platform in the past hour alone. This is one of them,” one X user wrote, sharing a screenshot from the video.
“Trump just posted an incredibly racist photo of the Obama’s faces photoshopped on to the body of apes. Every day is a new rock bottom for this ugly pig,” another user posted.
“Donald Trump, the most openly racist President since slavery was abolished, just shared a video of Michelle & Barack Obama as APES. This is what the Republican party is now,” another wrote.

“Trump just posted an incredibly racist photo of the Obama’s faces photoshopped on to the body of apes. Every day is a new rock bottom for this ugly pig,” another added.
The video, which Trump posted twice during Black History Month, was just one of numerous posts. The majority focused on Trump’s unsubstantiated claims of election fraud, which he has persistently repeated in recent days as the midterms draw near.

In a separate post, Trump shared a screenshot reading “This can be a great option if things don’t work out”, accompanied by a video of Bruce Lee fighting.
The president’s most recent erratic social media activity follows his call for Republicans to “take over” the voting process and “nationalize” elections.
“The Republicans should say: ‘We want to take over. We should take over the voting in at least 15 places,'” the president proposed on a conservative podcast released on Monday.
“The Republicans ought to nationalize the voting,” Trump told former deputy FBI director Dan Bongino during the podcast.
