Giannis Antetokounmpo after Bucks elect not to trade him: ‘Legends don’t chase’

The trade deadline has come and gone and Giannis Antetokounmpo is still a member of the Milwaukee Bucks.

And now that he is still officially on the team, both Antetokounmpo and the Bucks have taken to social media to react to the situation.

Twenty minutes after the deadline passed, Antetokounmpo made a post on Instagram (and later X) with the caption, “Legends don’t chase. They attract”

The post featured a clip from the 2013 film “The Wolf of Wall Street,” in which Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Jordan Belfort, loudly declares that he’s “not f—ing leaving” to a thrilled office of employees.

The post also featured a picture of Antetokounmpo’s oldest son, Liam, in a pair of sunglasses.

“We always go back to the Bucks, the Bucks, the Bucks, and if I’m going to stay here, if I’m not gonna stay here. Let’s put the Bucks on the side for one second,” Antetokounmpo told The Athletic in an exclusive interview Tuesday. “Let’s talk about the city itself, the memories that I’ve created here. When you open my kids’ passports, it says Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I had four kids in the span of the last five years in this city. My dad is buried in this city. I’ve built a house for my mom 10 seconds away from my house. Literally, to walk to my mom’s front door, it takes me four seconds … right next door.

“On what planet, on what Earth, would somebody want to leave this?”

Meanwhile, four minutes after Antetokounmpo’s post, the Bucks also posted on their X account and featured a clip from head coach Doc Rivers’ media session before Tuesday’s game against the Chicago Bulls.

Rivers made those comments after the NBA announced that Antetokounmpo and his brothers, Alex and Thanasis, would be coaching ESPN reporter Shams Charania in this year’s All-Star Celebrity Game in Los Angeles.

“He did inform that he’s going to put Shams (Charania) on the trading block and then he’s just going to listen to offers,” Rivers said Tuesday while smiling. “So, I’m just gonna go make that announcement right now.”

Antetokounmpo and fellow Nike athlete Ja Morant, who also did not get traded before the deadline, also posted similar ad campaigns featuring the phrase “Proceed With Caution.”

Though Milwaukee did not trade Antetokounmpo by the deadline, the Bucks are expected to consider trade offers for him in the summer while trying to figure out the best path forward.
