Original Pirates Of The Caribbean Director Gives Definitive Update On Franchise Return Ahead Of Reboot

As Disney continues to explore the world of the Pirates of the Caribbean, original director Gore Verbinski reveals whether he would ever return to the franchise.
In an interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley for Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, Verbinski dashed the hopes of fans hoping to see him direct another Pirates of the Caribbean movie. The filmmaker explained that while he had a great time working on the first three installments of the franchise, he feels as if that chapter of his life has concluded.
Verbinski further explained that while he loved the franchise, he felt like he had given it all he could offer. He further elaborated, stating that making the same type of movie or any project over and over again makes it less interesting. The director added that returning to Pirates of the Caribbean wouldn’t give him the same sense of excitement that it initially did, which makes it less appealing.
However, the director made it clear that just because he wasn’t interested in returning, it doesn’t mean that there are no new stories to tell. He actually believes the opposite, feeling that the universe is so huge that there are endless possibilities for future projects. Verbinski also wished any new people joining the franchise nothing but the best:
I wish them the best. I just don’t have anything. I feel like I did three and, for me, it was a great opportunity to learn and to try something. I think we have to be at a place where the wheels are about to fall off. I think once you kind of know how to do something, it becomes less interesting or less dangerous. There’s just so little time and there are so many stories to tell.
Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean
Verbinski helmed the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films, The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), Dead Man’s Chest (2006), and At World’s End (2007). He helped turn the franchise into a worldwide phenomenon. The director has been credited with developing complex characters and playing a key role in the films’ realistic, practical and visual effects that were ahead of their time.
Disney is currently in the process of developing a new Pirates of the Caribbean film. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has stated that a screenplay for the upcoming movie is nearly complete. However, the studio’s plans are still subject to change, as reports claim that several scripts are being considered. There has also been a lot of online speculation regarding Johnny Depp’s return as Jack Sparrow, but nothing has been confirmed at the time of this article’s publication.
