Ravens hire Duke’s Harland Bower to fill a key defensive role

Ravens hire Duke’s Harland Bower as outside linebackers coach
The Baltimore Ravens are once again turning to the college ranks to fill a coaching opening. This time, they’re hiring Harland Bower from Duke University, according to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports. As Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic noted, Bower is the fifth Ravens coaching hire this offseason to come from the college level.

With a first-year head coach and several assistants new to the NFL, there could be an adjustment period as the staff adapts to the league’s speed and weekly grind. College coaches often bring strong teaching ability, but the NFL demands faster game-planning, sharper execution, and immediate results with veteran players. Building cohesion early will be key.
Still, the Ravens have long valued fresh perspectives and strong developmental coaching, and Bower’s addition continues that trend. If he can translate his college success into effective NFL instruction, Baltimore could benefit not only in the short term but also in building a deeper, more adaptable defensive staff moving forward.
