Winter Olympics 2026: Italy’s curlers back on track

Italy got their Olympic title defence back on track with back-to-back wins over Switzerland and Czechia.

On Thursday, Amos Mosaner and Stefania Constantini suffered their first international loss in 23 games against Canada, but showed little sign of dimming as they rolled past both of their opponents in front of buoyant crowds at the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium.

Against Switzerland’s husband-and-wife team, Yannick Schwaller and Briar Schwaller-Huerlimann, the Italians produced a four-point fourth end, before capitalising on an opportunity to steal three in the fifth and go ahead 10-4.

The Swiss triggered their power play in the sixth, but a back-to-back takeouts by Mosaner piled their pressure on, and when the moment came for Schwaller-Huerlimann to draw for one, she overshot the house, handing the Italians yet another steal for two. The Swiss couple subsequently reached for handshakes, conceding the game as the fans in the stands celebrated.

In their second game against Estonia, the Italians’ fast start powered them to a 7-4 victory to put them on an improved 3-1 record.

After opening with a statement three-point score, they then stole a single to sit 4-0 after two ends.

Harri Lill and Marie Kaldvee did their best to try to recover the lead, but Mosaner and Constantini held them at bay.

Following a one-point power play and a steal of one in the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-2, the Italians then nicked a two after a draw to the button to stretch the advantage back out again.

From there, they successfully controlled the game to secure consecutive wins.

“We got off to a good start, we tried to understand where we went wrong last night and fixed a few things. We can be happy with today, especially with our style of play and the shots we took,” Mosaner said to Olympics.com, reflecting on their recovery from yesterday’s loss.

“Let’s hope it continues upwards. We are doing a great job and will continue to do so. This support makes every victory even more special,” added Constantini.
