Coronation Street airs devastating Debbie cliffhanger – but there’s hope she’ll be freed

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street has aired a devastating cliffhanger for Debbie Webster tonight, following her dramatic court sentencing. After suffering another TIA, terrified Debbie found herself handcuffed in her hospital bed. But will the incident lead to a more lenient punishment?

In tonight’s episode, Debbie anxiously prepared for her day in court as she remained determined to take the fall for Carl Webster’s crime. The businesswoman offered some final words of advice to Ryan Connor, who she was leaving in charge of her hotel.

Before she left, Ryan handed her an envelope from Carl, containing the key to her flat. Having recently revealed that she is his biological mum, Debbie was devastated that Carl had officially cut ties with her.

“I’ve just got to do one more thing,” she told her husband Ronnie Bailey, before rushing out to find Carl.

At Roy’s Rolls, Debbie issued a final plea to her son, apologising for hurting him and begging him to support her in court. But Carl told her there would be “no emotional goodbyes” and “no prison visits”, declaring they were “done”.

Though Carl wasn’t present at her sentencing, Debbie was supported by Kevin, Abi, Ronnie and Ryan. They hoped that, given Debbie’s vascular dementia diagnosis, she wouldn’t have to face any prison time.

Unfortunately, despite her remorse and condition, Debbie was still given an immediate custodial sentence of two years and eight months. She was led away by an officer, as her family tearfully looked on.

In her cell, Debbie’s vision suddenly blurred and she called for help before collapsing on the floor.

Meanwhile, back on the street, Kevin chastised Carl for not showing up in court. Their argument was interrupted when the prison called Ronnie, revealing Debbie had suffered another Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA).

Later, a confused Debbie woke up in hospital and broke out into sobs as she realised what had happened. But when she tried to wipe her eyes, she noticed she was handcuffed and a police guard sat nearby.

While Debbie was heartbroken by this new development, next week’s episodes could provide some hope for the whole family, as her lawyer Adam Barlow devises a plan. In upcoming scenes, Adam tells Carl that Debbie’s recent TIA could be used as evidence for a sentence reduction.

But will vengeful Carl ruin her chance for an early release?

Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
