Major shoe chain with 160 stores to shut branch in hours as 50%-off sale launched

A MAJOR shoe chain with 160 UK stores is to shut one of its branches for good this weekend, as shoppers have just hours left to get 50% off in store.

Pavers will close down its Plymouth city centre store on Sunday February 8, with locals left devasted by the news.

A sign in the window of the New George Street branch told shoppers: “Sorry, this store is closing down.

“But don’t worry, this isn’t a goodbye. Your nearest store is: Plymouth, The Barbican.”

The reason for the closure has not been confirmed, but retailers have been under pressure in recent years from rising running costs and a drop in footfall on Britain’s high streets.

Shoppers have been left heartbroken by the news, with one telling Plymouth Live: “Another casualty of online shopping! It’s one of my favourite shops.

“I buy all my boots from Pavers, they’re the best. Such a shame. Thank goodness for the Barbican branch.”

Another said: “We are starting to lose businesses, left, right and centre. Plymouth city centre will become a ghost town.”

The store is holding a major sale ahead of the closure, with signs saying “everything must go” and “take a further 50% off stock“.

It is not known if any staff at the city centre store will lose their jobs.

Pavers is a family-run business which was founded in 1971 and has over 160 branches in the UK and Ireland.

A spokesperson for Pavers told PlymouthLive: “We don’t give formal comments on store closures, however I can confirm that the Plymouth Barbican store is remaining open.”
