Upstate NY man claims $1 million Powerball prize that he won on Christmas Eve

An Upstate New York lottery player took home a $1 million prize after matching five numbers in the Dec. 24 Powerball drawing.

Christopher Prentice of Sidney (Delaware County) claimed the second-tier prize for matching the first five numbers drawn in the game. He received his winnings as a lump sum payment totaling $651,000 after required withholdings.

Prentice purchased the winning ticket at Smiley’s Stop N Shop on Main Street in Sidney.

New York’s Powerball game generated $327,836,044 in total sales during fiscal year 2024-2025. School districts in Delaware County received $7,776,658 in Lottery Aid to Education funds during the same period.
