As part of its 2026 Tourism Promotion Program, the Region of Crete participated in the OTM international tourism exhibition in Mumbai (February 5–7), alongside the Greek Luxury Tourism Workshop held on February 4, continuing an effort launched last year to strengthen its presence in the Indian market.

OTM is the largest tourism exhibition in India and one of the leading travel trade events globally, bringing together more than 2,200 exhibitors from around 60 countries and attracting over 50,000 industry professionals.

Participation in the Greek Luxury Tourism Workshop formed part of Crete’s targeted strategy to expand its footprint in the luxury segment. Regional representatives presented the island’s tourism offering and held B2B meetings with Indian travel agents, focusing on high-end leisure travel, MICE, wedding tourism and cultural experiences.

India is considered one of the world’s fastest-growing outbound markets. According to INSETE data, seven in ten Indian travelers plan to travel abroad within the next 12 months, while Greece has climbed 13 positions in the country’s destination rankings.

Air connectivity is seen as a key enabler of growth. IndiGo has recently launched direct flights linking Mumbai and New Delhi with Athens, while Aegean Airlines (AEGEAN) is also expected to introduce services. Airlines are preparing for potential direct routes to Crete, which are anticipated to intensify with the operation of the new international airport at Kastelli.

Crete’s positioning is further supported by its designation as European Region of Gastronomy for 2026, with the Cretan diet forming a central pillar of its promotional strategy.

Deputy Regional Governor for Tourism Kyriakos Kotsoglou said India represents an immediate strategic target, noting that developments in aviation and the island’s upgraded tourism profile create favorable conditions for market expansion.
