The Syracuse men’s basketball team needed two extra periods to secure a 107-100 victory over California on Wednesday evening at the JMA Wireless Dome.
Senior Nate Kingz paced the Orange with 27 points in a game that featured 28 lead changes and 14 ties. Syracuse improved to 14-11 overall and 5-7 in the ACC with the win.
The Orange received balanced scoring throughout the contest, with six players reaching double figures. William Kyle III recorded a double-double with 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds, while J.J. Starling matched his season high with 21 points. Donnie Freeman contributed 16 points, Naithan George added 14, and Sadiq White Jr. chipped in 10.
California got 23 points from Dai Dai Ames and 21 from John Camden, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Syracuse’s dominance in the paint. The Orange outscored the Bears 62-46 inside and held a 43-41 advantage on the boards.
Regulation ended tied at 78-78 after Ames converted a layup for California. Syracuse had possession with 22 seconds remaining but turned the ball over, though the Orange defense forced a missed shot at the buzzer.
The first overtime also ended in dramatic fashion. California’s Mlos Ilic grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on a tip-in just before time expired to tie the game at 91-91 and force a second extra period.
Syracuse seized control in the final overtime. Kyle III made a free throw and Freeman hit a jumper to give the Orange a 94-91 lead. Kingz later connected on a corner 3-pointer to extend the advantage to 99-93 with less than two minutes remaining. Freeman and Starling sealed the victory with free throws in the closing seconds.
The game was briefly delayed due to a power outage in the arena, but both teams agreed to continue playing.
