Why Jack Eichel is key to USA men’s ice hockey gold at 2026 Winter Olympics

Jack Eichel: All he does is win
Eichel is a great representation of the ‘best on best’ phrase often used to describe the return of National Hockey League (NHL) players to the Winter Olympics.
The 29-year-old is making his Winter Olympics debut as a top six forward on one of the best teams in the tournament. It’s no surprise to see Eichel getting top billing. He’s been an elite player for 10 pro seasons.
Two months before being selected second overall by the Buffalo Sabres, Eichel became the second freshman to win the Hobey Baker Memorial Award. The Boston University forward led the NCAA with 26 goals and 45 assists to help the Terriers to the Frozen Four NCAA Championship game. Although BU fell to Hockey East rivals Providence College, Eichel stood out as a top prospect heading into the Draft.
On October 18, 2015, 10 days away from his 19th birthday, Buffalo’s first round pick became the youngest player to score a goal in his NHL debut. The rookie scored on the power play after making two heady plays along the halfwall to keep the offensive zone.
It’s fitting his first goal came on special teams, an area where he still thrives today.
