Senegal federation and players back 18 fans held in Morocco after AFCON final disorder

Thirty days after the AFCON final, Senegal’s federation and senior players have rallied behind 18 supporters still detained in Morocco following late-match disturbances.
According to L’Équipe, the federation’s Tuesday statement said the situation of the 18 Senegalese supporters in Morocco is being monitored with the utmost attention. It added that the Senegalese state is fully mobilised at the highest level to engage with Moroccan authorities and to ensure detention conditions and the respect of the supporters’ rights.
The fans were arrested after the stormy finale to Senegal’s 1-0 extra-time win over Morocco. In early February they began intermittent fasting to protest their interrogation conditions.
The statement expressed confidence in ongoing diplomatic and legal efforts and voiced conviction that a positive outcome would follow soon. It also urged calm, solidarity and trust in the process.
Players have taken a firmer line. Moussa Niakhaté relayed the federation’s update on Instagram, calling for the supporters to be freed, while Pape Matar Sarr used X on Tuesday morning to denounce the detention as unjust, demand their release and offer full support to his compatriots.
