What we know

The Tulsa location will mark IKEA’s first store in Oklahoma. Most traditional IKEA stores are about 300,000 square feet, but the company has recently shifted toward smaller-format locations as part of its expansion strategy.

The Tulsa store will be one of several new locations planned across the country. Other cities include Los Angeles, Chicago, and Fort Collins, Colorado.

Six additional locations have also been announced, including Huntsville, Alabama; University Park in Dallas; Phoenix; Rockwall in Dallas; the Chantilly/Dulles area in the Washington region; and Houston-Webster, Texas.

Company performance

The announcement was included in IKEA’s 2025 Annual Summary. The company reported $5.3 billion in total sales and said more than 61 million people visited its stores during the 2025 fiscal year, despite broader economic challenges.

Statement from the City

“For years, Tulsans have rallied around the idea of having an IKEA in our city, and I’m proud to say this generation of leaders made it happen,” Mayor Monroe Nichols said. “I want to thank Erran Persley, our Chief Economic Development Officer, PartnerTulsa, the Tulsa City Council, and so many others for helping make this a reality.”

“Bringing world-class retailers to our residents has always been a top priority of mine,” District 2 City Councilor Anthony Archie said. “IKEA’s investment in Tulsa Hills represents jobs and economic growth for District 2. Our economic development team is the best – they are working so hard to make Tulsa the best place to live, work, and play!”

Statement from Regan Gowens, TYPROS executive director:

“The announcement of IKEA opening a Tulsa location decidedly marks the momentum Tulsa is experiencing. TYPROS has been a long-time advocate for the presence of retailers like IKEA, attracting the attention of businesses like Trader Joe’s and Uber to invest in Tulsa. TYPROS launched the initial Bring It To Tulsa campaign with Trader Joe’s in 2013 and then again with Uber in 2014. It is important to note, however, that this work is not done alone. It is the collaboration of partners such as Gitwit, Partner Tulsa, Tulsa Remote and Et Al that will enable the region to attract retailers and business and ultimately strengthen Tulsa’s appeal to those looking to move here.”

What’s next

IKEA has not announced hiring details or construction timelines for the Tulsa store. The company said more information will be released closer to the opening date.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

Several organizations including Tulsa Remote and Tulsa Young Professionals are working on a campaign called “Tulsa Loves IKEA.”
