U.S. skier Mikaela Shiffrin wins gold in slalom, ends Olympic drought

CORTINA d’AMPEZZO, Italy — The performance Mikaela Shiffrin delivered Wednesday both stood out as extraordinary and faded into the background as mundane and routine. The expectation to win — out of the spotlight and in the blinding glare of the Olympics — becomes suffocating.
