Winter makes a comeback with heavy snow in parts of eastern Iowa Thursday

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Iowa’s News Now) — The month of February has had a mostly spring feel to it. Temperatures have been in the 50s, 60s and even 70s over the past week. Now, winter is making a big comeback and trends have pointed toward the potential for heavy snow in parts of eastern Iowa Thursday evening.
As a result, Winter Storm Warnings & Winter Weather Advisories have been posted for a portion of the area.
Rain will begin to fall in spots after 1 p.m. with a gradual changeover to snow from north to south after 6 p.m. There are signs of a lot of moisture and lift in the atmosphere, which will lead to heavy snow near the Highway 20 corridor.
Rain will turn to snow Thursday evening and Thursday night
As a result, the snow will be able to accumulate and lead to slick streets Thursday evening into Friday morning. Gusty winds could also lead to low visibility.
The track of this storm has shifted back north and there has been more confidence in an area of heavy snow. That could result in 6-8″+ of snowfall accumulation somewhere within the warning zone.
There will be a sharp cutoff to lower totals to the north and south of the heaviest snow.
