Sidney Crosby to test injury, unlikely to play against Finland

Canada captain Sidney Crosby skated Friday morning in a closed ice session to test his lower-body injury.

TSN’s Ryan Rishaug reports Crosby remains doubtful to play in Canada’s semifinal against Finland, but notes it is a positive sign he was able to skate.

Only two days remain in the Olympic tournament. Following Friday’s semifinal, Canada will either advance to the gold-medal game on Sunday or the bronze-medal game on Saturday.

As planned Crosby skated this morning in a closed ice session. Remains doubtful for tonight but certainly a good sign he was able to test things out.

Crosby, 38, was injured in the second period of Canada’s narrow 4-3 overtime win over Czechia in the quarter-finals after getting tangled up with Czechia defenceman Radko Gudas.

The 5-foot-11 centre was favouring his right leg as he gingerly walked towards the dressing room.

Head coach Jon Cooper didn’t rule out Crosby playing in the semifinal earlier on Thursday during Canada’s optional practice.

“We’ve got the best of the best looking at him,” he said. “We’re taking this day by day … we’re not going to put anyone in harm’s way. But if he can play, he’s definitely going to.

“We’ll know more in 24 hours.”

Crosby has two goals and six points through four games of this Olympic tournament.

He is playing in his third Olympic games and he and defenceman Drew Doughty are looking to become the first Canadian men’s hockey players to win three gold medals.
